When going the grocery store stay on the outside aisles. Here you will find fresh veggies, fresh fruit, lean meats, almost everything you need to buy to stay healthy. Once you venture to the inside aisles you find products which are refined, have many additives etc. Of course there are some exceptions to the rules, but if you buy most of your foods fresh you will be much healthier.
Most people that I treat for joint pain have used a lot of diet drinks, and sugar substitute. Stay away from sugar as much as you can, but when you have to have sweets don't use a sugar substitute. A very small piece of chocolate goes a long way.

1. Eat 5 small meals per day.
2. Eat whole grains, fruits and veggies.
3. Don't skip breakfast. Eat whole grain cereals containing less that 27% carbohydrates.
4. For lunch skip the chips, skip the sweets. Lettuce wraps make a wonderful alternative to sandwiches, or use sprouted grain "bread", found in the frozen food department.
5. For dinner have a small piece of lean meat, with all the veggies you choose. Use fresh fruit for your dessert.
6. One glass of wine with your meal is ok, but don't drink it on an empty stomach.
7. For snacks, choose a protein such nuts, along with raw veggies, or fruit.

So a piece of white bread is the same as far as carbs. as a piece of whole wheat bread. While this is true carb wise, it is not true health wise. Staying away from processed foods is very smart. Staying away from drinks high in sweeteners, and caffeine is smart.
Sweeteners that are ok to use a small amount of = Agave, Stevia Stay away from sugar substitutes.
Taking cinnamon tablets helps to lower blood sugar.
Exercise helps to lower blood sugar.
Keeping your blood sugar to a normal level is very, very important. People with high blood sugar tend to also have cardiovascular problems. So -- don't eat lots of red meat. Eat fish a couple of times per week. Eat a small amount of chicken. Sugar and carbs help to raise cholesterol.
